Reading Homework:

-Mrs. Parker’s reading class has homework tonight to read pages 179-198 by Monday in their Esperanza Rising book. The book should be in their Daily folder and must be returned to school. An electronic version is found on CTLS Learn in their ELA class.

-Every night, your child should read 20-30 minutes. They do not need to turn in a reading log. Feel free to engage in asking your child questions about the book they are reading. Below are some links for questions you can ask your child about their book:

Topics of Learning for Next Week:

-ELA: We are continuing to read the Esperanza Rising book to study the meaning of metaphors and character reactions. The goal is to understand how both impact the plot of a story.

-Grammar: After IOWA testing, students will begin studying interjections. They will be quizzed on interjections September 23rd.

-Social Studies: We will continue studying immigration during the turn of the century in the early 1900s. Students will be learning the push and pull factors for immigration and what life was like for many once they arrived in America. Students will be asked to write a narrative from the perspective of an immigrant during this time period for a writing and social studies grade.

Math and Science: (message from Mr. Connelly)

We started Unit 2 in math this week. Unit 2 covers place value with decimals. The students will continue to work with place value and decimals and will have plenty of resources in their math folder to use as practice. Please make sure your student is using their Clever account to login to Dreambox. They need to perform 20 minutes of Dreambox each night. They may also use Zearn if they desire more practice. In science, the students will learn about vascular and non-vascular plants. We will work on a three week-long STEM project that will be full of interactive and project-based activities. On a side note, please help your student make multiplication and division flash cards. The cards are beneficial for testing their math fluency and will only improve their ability. The standards for Math and Science are listed below. Have a safe afternoon.

Life in 5th Grade

Calendar Dates:

-Monday, August 23: Early Release Day ends at 12:30

Absences:

-If your child will be absent, please let Mr. Connelly and Mrs. Parker know. We need to make sure your child stays feeling prepared and confident. We can post information on CTLS Learn. You can send in a note or email us: jason.connelly@cobbk12.org    jill.swanger@cobbk12.org

Topics of Learning for Next Week:

-ELA: We will be focusing on how to use text evidence to answer questions. The students need to continue practicing how to quote accurately (C) when they prove their answers. The evidence is the support or detail.

-Grammar: On Thursday, August 26, students will have a quiz on conjunctions. They need to know examples (FANBOYS), function (link 2 ideas), and meanings (they have a cheat sheet).

-Social Studies: Theodore Roosevelt’s role in the expansion of America and the impact of the Panama Canal.
Science: *NOTE: Science will be assessed on 8/27.

Earth Science

S5E1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to identify surface features on the Earth caused by constructive or destructive processes.

  1. Construct an argument supported by scientific evidence to identify surface features (examples could include deltas, sand dunes, mountains, volcanoes) as being caused by constructive or destructive processes (examples could include deposition, weathering, erosion, and impact of organisms).
  2. Develop simple interactive models to collect data that illustrate how changes in surface features are/were caused by constructive or destructive processes.
  3. Ask questions to obtain information on how technology is used to limit &/ or predict the impact of constructive &, destructive processes. (Clarification statement: Examples could include seismological studies, flood forecasting (GIS maps), engineering/construction methods &; materials, & Infrared/satellite imagery.)

-Math: *NOTE: Math will be assessed on 8/26

MGSE5.OA.1 Use parentheses, brackets, or braces in numerical expressions, and evaluate expressions with these symbols.

Understand the place value system.

MGSE5.NBT.1 Recognize that in a multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents 10 times as much as it represents in the place to its right and 1/10 of what it represents in the place to its left.

MGSE5.NBT.2 Explain patterns in the number of zeros of the product when multiplying a number by powers of 10, and explain patterns in the placement of the decimal point when a decimal is multiplied or divided by a power of 10.  Use whole-number exponents to denote powers of 10.

Perform Operations with Multi-Digit Whole Numbers.

MGSE5.NBT.5 Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm (or other strategies demonstrating understanding of multiplication) up to a 3 digit by 2 digit factor.

FYI

Calendar Dates:

-Monday, August 23: Early Release Day

Health and Safety:

-Germs are back with a vengeance right now. I highly encourage the students to wear masks while in the classroom for the next few days to help slow the spread. We do Clorox desks, Lysol spray the room, and I have 2 air purifiers. Continue to encourage your child to wash their hands often as well.

-A water bottle is critical for your child to bring every day. These kids need to stay hydrated. If you need me to provide your child with a reusable water bottle feel free to let me know. I am happy to help in any way I can.

-Snacks are also very important during this growing time in these kids lives. We are unable to sustain purchasing snacks for so many students on a daily basis. Please, consider healthy snacks and no nuts due to our peanut allergies in the classroom. Let’s keep those kids safe.

-Due to food and nutrition guidelines we are unable to allow fast food and/or restaurant food/drinks brought to school for student consumption.  All food brought to school should be prepared at home.  Please remember that cafeteria lunches are available for no charge this year.

Thursdays:

-Information started going home today in their “Thursday folder”. The official folder has not arrived yet. Check this “folder” out for school information.

-You will have an email blast from Big Shanty with updated information in your CTLS Parent (ParentSquare).

Homework:

-For reading, students should be reading for 20-30 minutes every night. The reason for this is to help your child grow as a reader. Reading, reading, reading is the best way to build and enhance that strength. Just remember to bring that book back to school each day for class. A strategy would be to have your child put the book in their book bag before bed.

-For math, students will work on Dreambox. More information will come soon for that. For now, students can create math problems and solve them for practice each night.

Absences:

-If your child will be absent, please let Mr. Connelly and Mrs. Parker know. We need to make sure your child stays feeling prepared and confident. You can send in a note or email us: jason.connelly@cobbk12.org    jill.swanger@cobbk12.org

Schedule Change:

-Starting next week, science and social studies will be taught on Fridays. Monday-Thursday will be ELA and math.

Topics of Learning for Next Week:

-ELA: We will continue reading Esperanza Rising and learn how each chapter describes the overall structure of the story. We will focus on finding main ideas with details that support and how to take that information to write an informational summary.

-Grammar: We will spend 8 days learning about the function of conjunctions. On Thursday, August 26, students will have a quiz on this.

-Math: We are working on O.A.1 (use parenthesis and evaluate expressions) and NBT.1 (place value)

-Science: We are continuing with destructive and constructive forces

What We’ll Be Learning Next Week…

Wow! It has been a wonderful week. Our hearts are full. We love your child and feel blessed that we are sharing this school year together. Thank you to all the families who have turned in their colorful forms from Meet and Greet and clinic card from the Cobb County folder. If you still have those at home, please turn them in, so we have the information to keep your child safe.
Next week starts a new learning week. Here is a preview of what they will be learning:
-In science, students will begin learning about constructive and destructive forces
-In social studies, we will be launching by getting an overview of the subjects we will learn about. We will also see what it takes to think like a historian, an economist, a political scientist, and a geographer.
-In math, students will begin learning the order of operations.
-In ELA, we will start our first unit. This will be using Esperanza Rising as our mentor text. We will specifically be looking at the structure of the story (plot story mountain) and determining background knowledge in order to help us comprehend the story.

August 3

Peanut Allergies

I loved meeting your child today. We had fun getting to know each other and learning how to work in a group. Thank you for turning in the information sheets. Through those I learned we have many students with peanut allergies in our classroom. For the safety of these children, please bring in snacks that do not contain peanuts. We appreciate your help and support in keeping them safe. If you still have some forms to complete, please have your child return those tomorrow.
