August 12

FYI

Calendar Dates:

-Monday, August 23: Early Release Day

Health and Safety:

-Germs are back with a vengeance right now. I highly encourage the students to wear masks while in the classroom for the next few days to help slow the spread. We do Clorox desks, Lysol spray the room, and I have 2 air purifiers. Continue to encourage your child to wash their hands often as well.

-A water bottle is critical for your child to bring every day. These kids need to stay hydrated. If you need me to provide your child with a reusable water bottle feel free to let me know. I am happy to help in any way I can.

-Snacks are also very important during this growing time in these kids lives. We are unable to sustain purchasing snacks for so many students on a daily basis. Please, consider healthy snacks and no nuts due to our peanut allergies in the classroom. Let’s keep those kids safe.

-Due to food and nutrition guidelines we are unable to allow fast food and/or restaurant food/drinks brought to school for student consumption.  All food brought to school should be prepared at home.  Please remember that cafeteria lunches are available for no charge this year.

Thursdays:

-Information started going home today in their “Thursday folder”. The official folder has not arrived yet. Check this “folder” out for school information.

-You will have an email blast from Big Shanty with updated information in your CTLS Parent (ParentSquare).

Homework:

-For reading, students should be reading for 20-30 minutes every night. The reason for this is to help your child grow as a reader. Reading, reading, reading is the best way to build and enhance that strength. Just remember to bring that book back to school each day for class. A strategy would be to have your child put the book in their book bag before bed.

-For math, students will work on Dreambox. More information will come soon for that. For now, students can create math problems and solve them for practice each night.

Absences:

-If your child will be absent, please let Mr. Connelly and Mrs. Parker know. We need to make sure your child stays feeling prepared and confident. You can send in a note or email us: jason.connelly@cobbk12.org    jill.swanger@cobbk12.org

Schedule Change:

-Starting next week, science and social studies will be taught on Fridays. Monday-Thursday will be ELA and math.

Topics of Learning for Next Week:

-ELA: We will continue reading Esperanza Rising and learn how each chapter describes the overall structure of the story. We will focus on finding main ideas with details that support and how to take that information to write an informational summary.

-Grammar: We will spend 8 days learning about the function of conjunctions. On Thursday, August 26, students will have a quiz on this.

-Math: We are working on O.A.1 (use parenthesis and evaluate expressions) and NBT.1 (place value)

-Science: We are continuing with destructive and constructive forces
