GA Aquarium 5th Grade Field Trip:
Please, check your child’s Daily folder for information on this field trip. In order to attend, your child will need to bring in the completed permission slip, signed behavior contract, and full payment by March 30th. Notice that we will return after the school day ends, so your child will need to either stay in ASP (they need to be registered & regular fees apply) or be picked up by car.
February Choice Board (Learning Commons):
Check out this link for online activities from Mrs. Borg. This month’s reading challenge went home on a blue piece of paper last week. Click: Choice Board Link
Topics of Learning for Next Week:
–ELA: Students will finish drafting their opinion/persuasive essay on the most important factor for Jackie Robinson’s success in breaking the color barrier during Jim Crow era. Please, make sure your child is not taking home their organizer nor writing journal. I need to know what your child can do in class during class time without parent one-on-one support. You are welcome to talk through ideas with your child that would be wonderful; however, please, do not work on the actual assignment itself together. That is a specialized accommodation.

–Social Studies:
For the final day of this unit, students will learn about the United Nations and have their World War II test on March 4th. As study guide will be sent home this Friday (2/18). If they want extra information on World Ward II, they can login to their Clever account and find information in Studies Weekly or BrainPop.
–Math:
We finished our unit on fractions, but we should continue to practice using the skills and strategies we acquired from the unit, including previous units. I spoke with the kiddos about learning to remember versus learning to pass a test. Please assist them with studying and improving their note taking. I am so proud to be their teacher, but I know we can do even better this second half of the year.
In this unit students will:
- Identify similarities and differences among two-dimensional figures.
- Reason about attributes (properties) of two-dimensional figures.
- Have experiences discussing the property of two-dimensional figures.
- Build upon their fourth-grade knowledge and create a hierarchy diagram
- Understand that attributes belonging to a category of two-dimensional figures also belong to all subcategories of that category
Standard:
Classify two-dimensional figures into categories based on their properties
MGSE5.G.3 Understand that attributes belonging to a category of two-dimensional figures also belong to all subcategories of that category. For example, all rectangles have four right angles and squares are rectangles, so all squares have four right angles.
Assignments: Work in Folder
Assessment: TBA after the break
**Extra Practice: Practice math pages are sent home weekly (check their Daily), extra practice resources are posted visibly in the math classroom, and Dreambox online (access on Clever.com).
-Science:
In this unit, students will:
- Begin to identify chemical and physical changes. It is not always easy to tell one from the other.
- Be aware that scientists sometimes disagree on whether a change is physical or chemical or both. At the 5th grade level we should keep it simple.
- Understand that a physical change is a change that can be reversed. The shape or size of the matter has been moved around, but not permanently altered.
- Identify the basic physical changes of water (gas, liquid, and solid).
Standard:
S5P1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to explain the differences between a physical change & a chemical change.
- Plan & carry out investigations of physical changes by manipulating, separating, & mixing dry and liquid materials.
- Construct an argument based on observations to support a claim that the physical changes in the state of water are due to temperature differences, which cause small particles that cannot be seen to move differently.
- Plan & carry out an investigation to determine if a chemical change occurred based on observable evidence (color, gas, temperature change, odor, new substance produced).
Assignments: Study notes from previous week. The notes are on CTLS for those who feel they didn’t write something down clearly.
Assessment: TBA after the break
