Writing Fair:

  • Any genre of writing is accepted, but only text can be submitted (no illustrations, comic books, etc.).
  • Writing has to be original (not copied from anyone else’s work, including a teacher’s model writing).
  • Writing can be from any time this school year.
  • Writing can be something the student wrote on his/her own (at home or at school) or as a school assignment.
  • Writing can be handwritten or typed.
  • There is a 1900 word count limit, so don’t submit anyone’s 65-chapter novel, but there is also no need to count every word. 1900 words works out to be just under 4 single-spaced typed pages typically.

Topics of Learning for This Week:

ELA: Students will continue reading a book about Jackie Robinson to read how people respond to challenges they face. This leads into understanding theme (message of a story) and how character reactions create the plot of the story. We will continue working on finding main ideas and using those to summarize.

Main Idea Practice: https://www.khanacademy.org/ela/cc-5th-reading-vocab/x798e47233e450b09:cc-5th-athletes-in-action/x798e47233e450b09:close-reading-informational-text-title-ix/v/two-or-more-main-ideas-reading

Grammar: We will be reviewing verb tenses (past, present, future). Students can practice online using Khan Academy: https://www.khanacademy.org/humanities/grammar/parts-of-speech-the-verb/the-tenses/v/introduction-to-verb-tense-the-parts-of-speech-grammar

Quiz on January 20th.

Social Studies: Students will add to their knowledge and understanding of FDR’s New Deal Programs during the Great Depression of the 1930s. Students will write a post card from the perspective of a person living during this time period working one of those jobs (CCC, WPA, or TVA).

Students can prepare by:

-logging into their Clever account: https://clever.com/

-going to Studies Weekly

-In the 5th grade “newspaper” click on Week 14 “The New Deal”

-Look at articles, videos, and quizzes linked there

Math:

In this unit students will:

Use equivalent fractions as a strategy to add and subtract fractions.

Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to multiply and divide fractions.

Represent and interpret data.

The students will be finishing the unit on fractions in the next few weeks. The standards we will cover are listed below. Please ask your child to study the notes they wrote in their math journal. The notes we wrote will help them clarify and practice for the coming week. You can contact me if you have any questions concerning their math and science.

Standards:

MGSE5.NF.4: Multiplying Fractions

MGSE5.NF.5 Multiplication as scaling

(I can fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers.)

MGSE5.NF.6 Dividing fractions

(I can fluently divide four-digit whole numbers by two-digit whole

numbers and then, explain/show the results using equations,

arrays or area models.)

MGSE5.NF.3 Interpret fractions as division

-Science:

In this unit, the students will:

Gather evidence by utilizing technology (microscopes) to construct arguments that explain the similarities and differences between plant and animals cells.

Develop models (pictures, words, images) to identify and label parts of a plant and animal cell. This unit is not on classifying microorganisms. It builds on the third and fourth grade understandings of habitats and food chains. This unit focuses on evidence of harmful and beneficial organisms in the ecosystem.

We are looking forward to our science unit coming up. The students will love the projects we have planned, but please have a discussion with your student about the type of conduct we need to see during our lesson. We will be using supplies that cannot be abused or used in a manner that is not conducive to learning.

Standard:

S5L4. Obtain, evaluate and communicate information about how microorganisms benefit or harm larger organisms.(Clarification statement: Possible microorganisms could include Tardigrades, Lactobacillus, Probiotics, Rotifers, Salmonella, Clostridium botulinum (Botox), E-coli, Algae, etc. Students are not expected to know these specific organisms. The list is provided to give teachers examples.)

Construct an argument using scientific evidence to support a claim that microorganisms are beneficial.

Construct an argument using scientific evidence to support a claim that microorganisms are harmful.

Assessments:

-Math 1/20/2022 Fractions and previously taught standards (please refer to their math journal for support or contact me)

-Science: TBA (We are currently working on dates, but we will update you asap)
