GA Aquarium 5th Grade Field Trip:
Please, check your child’s Daily folder for information on this field trip. In order to attend, your child will need to bring in the completed permission slip, signed behavior contract, and full payment by March 30th. Notice that we will return after the school day ends, so your child will need to either stay in ASP (they need to be registered & regular fees apply) or be picked up by car.
Topics of Learning for Next Week:
–ELA: Students will be publishing their persuasive essays for factors and reasons Jackie Robinson was successful in breaking the color barrier during the Jim Crow segregation era.

–Social Studies:
Students will begin day 1 of the 4-day unit regarding the 40 year Cold War between USA and Soviet Union. For day 1 of the unit, students will learn what communism is, iron curtain, the concern with communism spreading, alliances with NATO, and Berlin wall. If they want extra information on Cold War, they can login to their Clever account and find information in Studies Weekly or BrainPop.
–Math:
In this unit, students will:
- Change units to related units within the same measurement system by multiplying or dividing using conversion factors.
- Use line plots to display a data set of measurements that includes fractions.
- Use operations to solve problems based on data displayed in a line plot.
- Recognize volume as an attribute of three-dimensional space.
- Understand that volume can be measured by finding the total number of same size units of volume required to fill the space without gaps or overlaps.
- Understand that a 1-unit by 1-unit by 1-unit cube is the standard unit for measuring volume.
- Select appropriate units, strategies, and tools for solving problems that involve estimating and measuring volume.
- Decompose three-dimensional shapes and find volumes of right rectangular prisms by viewing them as decomposed into layers of arrays of cubes.
- Measure necessary attributes of shapes in order to determine volumes to solve real world and mathematical problems.
- Communicate precisely by engaging in discussion about their reasoning using appropriate mathematical language.
Standard:
MGSE5.MD.1 Convert among different-sized standard measurement units (mass, weight, length, time, etc.) within a given measurement system (customary and metric) (e.g., convert 5 cm to 0.05 m), and use these conversions in solving multi-step, real word problems.
MGSE5.MD.3 Recognize volume as an attribute of solid figures an understand concepts of volume measurement.
- A cube with side length 1 unit, called a “unit cube,” is said to have “one cubic unit” of volume, and can be used to measure volume.
- A solid figure which can be packed without gaps or overlaps using n unit cubes is said to have a volume of n cubic units.
Things To Do:
Assessment: 3/9/2022
Practice Sheets: Lesson 20
Dreambox: 20 minutes every night
–Science:
In this unit, students will:
- Carry out investigations to become familiar with the pushes and pulls of magnets and static electricity.
- Give students a basic understanding of what conditions produce a magnetic field (such as an electromagnet) and what conditions induce electric currents using simple circuits. Although electricity is the movement of electrons from one place to another, at this grade level there is no emphasis on electrons or atomic structure. will help students.
- Gain a basic understanding of the relationship between magnetism and electricity by explaining positive and negative charges as they attract and repel.
Standard:
S5P2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to investigate electricity.
- Obtain; combine information from multiple sources to explain the difference between naturally occurring electricity (static) and human-harnessed electricity.
- Design a complete, simple electric circuit; explain all necessary components.
- Plan and carry out investigations on common materials to determine if they are insulators or conductors of electricity.
S5P3. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about magnetism and its relationship to electricity.
- Construct an argument based on experimental evidence to communicate the differences in function; purpose of an electromagnet; magnet. (Clarification statement: Function is limited to understanding temporary; permanent magnetism)
- Plan and carry out an investigation to observe the interaction between a magnetic field and a magnetic object. (Clarification statement: The interaction should include placing materials of various types (wood, paper, glass, metal, and rocks) and thickness between the magnet and the magnetic object.)
Things To Do:
Assessment: 3/10 (Electricity)
Practice Sheets: Electricity
Study notes in journal 20 minutes every night
Thank you for being so wonderful and supportive. Mr. Connelly and I are always here for you and your child. Feel free to reach out to us anytime. We appreciate all that you do!
