Social Studies:

Students will begin day 1 of the 4-day unit regarding the 40 year Cold War between USA and Soviet Union. For day 1 of the unit, students will learn what communism is, iron curtain, the concern with communism spreading, alliances with NATO, and Berlin wall.  If they want extra information on Cold War, they can login to their Clever account and find information in Studies Weekly or BrainPop.

Math:

In this unit, students will:

  • Change units to related units within the same measurement system by multiplying or dividing using conversion factors.
  • Use line plots to display a data set of measurements that includes fractions.
  • Use operations to solve problems based on data displayed in a line plot.
  • Recognize volume as an attribute of three-dimensional space.
  • Understand that volume can be measured by finding the total number of same size units of volume required to fill the space without gaps or overlaps.
  • Understand that a 1-unit by 1-unit by 1-unit cube is the standard unit for measuring volume.
  • Select appropriate units, strategies, and tools for solving problems that involve estimating and measuring volume.
  • Decompose three-dimensional shapes and find volumes of right rectangular prisms by viewing them as decomposed into layers of arrays of cubes.
  • Measure necessary attributes of shapes in order to determine volumes to solve real world and mathematical problems.
  • Communicate precisely by engaging in discussion about their reasoning using appropriate mathematical language.

Standard:

MGSE5.MD.1 Convert among different-sized standard measurement units (mass, weight, length, time, etc.) within a given measurement system (customary and metric) (e.g., convert 5 cm to 0.05 m), and use these conversions in solving multi-step, real word problems.

MGSE5.MD.3 Recognize volume as an attribute of solid figures an understand concepts of volume measurement.

  1. A cube with side length 1 unit, called a “unit cube,” is said to have “one cubic unit” of volume, and can be used to measure volume.
  2.  A solid figure which can be packed without gaps or overlaps using n unit cubes is said to have a volume of n cubic units.

Things To Do:

Assessment: 3/9/2022

Practice Sheets: Lesson 20

Dreambox: 20 minutes every night

Science:

In this unit, students will:

  • Carry out investigations to become familiar with the pushes and pulls of magnets and static electricity.
  • Give students a basic understanding of what conditions produce a magnetic field (such as an electromagnet) and what conditions induce electric currents using simple circuits. Although electricity is the movement of electrons from one place to another, at this grade level there is no emphasis on electrons or atomic structure. will help students.
  • Gain a basic understanding of the relationship between magnetism and electricity by explaining positive and negative charges as they attract and repel.

Standard:

S5P2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to investigate electricity.

  1. Obtain; combine information from multiple sources to explain the difference between naturally occurring electricity (static) and human-harnessed electricity.
  2. Design a complete, simple electric circuit; explain all necessary components.
  3. Plan and carry out investigations on common materials to determine if they are insulators or conductors of electricity.

S5P3. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about magnetism and its relationship to electricity.

  1. Construct an argument based on experimental evidence to communicate the differences in function; purpose of an electromagnet; magnet. (Clarification statement: Function is limited to understanding temporary; permanent magnetism)
  2. Plan and carry out an investigation to observe the interaction between a magnetic field and a magnetic object. (Clarification statement: The interaction should include placing materials of various types (wood, paper, glass, metal, and rocks) and thickness between the magnet and the magnetic object.)

Things To Do:

Assessment: 3/10 (Electricity)

Practice Sheets: Electricity

Study notes in journal 20 minutes every night

Social Studies:

For the final day of this unit, students will learn about the United Nations and have their World War II test on March 4th.  As study guide will be sent home this Friday (2/18). If they want extra information on World Ward II, they can login to their Clever account and find information in Studies Weekly or BrainPop.

Math:

We finished our unit on fractions, but we should continue to practice using the skills and strategies we acquired from the unit, including previous units. I spoke with the kiddos about learning to remember versus learning to pass a test. Please assist them with studying and improving their note taking. I am so proud to be their teacher, but I know we can do even better this second half of the year.

In this unit students will:

  • Identify similarities and differences among two-dimensional figures.
  • Reason about attributes (properties) of two-dimensional figures.
  • Have experiences discussing the property of two-dimensional figures.
  • Build upon their fourth-grade knowledge and create a hierarchy diagram
  • Understand that attributes belonging to a category of two-dimensional figures also belong to all subcategories of that category

Standard:

Classify two-dimensional figures into categories based on their properties

MGSE5.G.3 Understand that attributes belonging to a category of two-dimensional figures also belong to all subcategories of that category.  For example, all rectangles have four right angles and squares are rectangles, so all squares have four right angles.

Assignments: Work in Folder

Assessment: TBA after the break

**Extra Practice: Practice math pages are sent home weekly (check their Daily), extra practice resources are posted visibly in the math classroom, and Dreambox online (access on Clever.com).

-Science

In this unit, students will:

  • Begin to identify chemical and physical changes. It is not always easy to tell one from the other.
  • Be aware that scientists sometimes disagree on whether a change is physical or chemical or both. At the 5th grade level we should keep it simple.
  • Understand that a physical change is a change that can be reversed. The shape or size of the matter has been moved around, but not permanently altered.
  • Identify the basic physical changes of water (gas, liquid, and solid).

Standard:

S5P1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to explain the differences between a physical change & a chemical change.

  1. Plan & carry out investigations of physical changes by manipulating, separating, & mixing dry and liquid materials.
  2. Construct an argument based on observations to support a claim that the physical changes in the state of water are due to temperature differences, which cause small particles that cannot be seen to move differently.
  3. Plan & carry out an investigation to determine if a chemical change occurred based on observable evidence (color, gas, temperature change, odor, new substance produced).

Assignments: Study notes from previous week. The notes are on CTLS for those who feel they didn’t write something down clearly.

Assessment: TBA after the break

Social Studies:

The goal for 5th grade regarding World War II is focusing on USA’s involvement in the war. For day 3 of this unit, the students will learn about the role Americans on the home front helping the war efforts (Rosie the Riveter, Tuskegee Airmen, Rationing & Victory Garden). Students will also learn a very basic age appropriate introduction to the Holocaust that was happening during this time. If they want extra information on these people, they can login to their Clever account and find information in Studies Weekly or BrainPop.

Math:

In this unit students will:

  • Use equivalent fractions as a strategy to add and subtract fractions.
  • Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to multiply and divide fractions.
  • Represent and interpret data.

Standards:

MGSE5.NF.3   Interpret a fraction as division of the numerator by the denominator (a/÷ b). Solve word problems involving division of whole numbers leading to answers in the form of fractions or mixed numbers, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem. Example:  3/5 can be interpreted as “3 divided by 5 and as 3 shared by 5”.

MGSE5.NF.4  Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication to multiply a fraction or whole number by a fraction.

  1. Apply and use understanding of multiplication to multiply a fraction or whole number by a fraction.
    Examples:  a/b x q  as  a/b x q/1  and    a/b x c/d = ac/b
  2. Find the area of a rectangle with fractional side lengths by tiling it with unit squares of the appropriate unit fraction side lengths, and show that the area is the same as would be found by multiplying the side lengths.

Math:

In this unit students will:

Use equivalent fractions as a strategy to add and subtract fractions.

Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to multiply and divide fractions.

Represent and interpret data.

The students will be finishing the unit on fractions in the next few weeks. The standards we will cover are listed below. Please ask your child to study the notes they wrote in their math journal. The notes we wrote will help them clarify and practice for the coming week. You can contact me if you have any questions concerning their math and science.

Standards:

MGSE5.NF.4: Multiplying Fractions

MGSE5.NF.5 Multiplication as scaling

(I can fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers.)

MGSE5.NF.6 Dividing fractions

(I can fluently divide four-digit whole numbers by two-digit whole

numbers and then, explain/show the results using equations,

arrays or area models.)

MGSE5.NF.3 Interpret fractions as division

-Science:

In this unit, the students will:

Gather evidence by utilizing technology (microscopes) to construct arguments that explain the similarities and differences between plant and animals cells.

Develop models (pictures, words, images) to identify and label parts of a plant and animal cell. This unit is not on classifying microorganisms. It builds on the third and fourth grade understandings of habitats and food chains. This unit focuses on evidence of harmful and beneficial organisms in the ecosystem.

We are looking forward to our science unit coming up. The students will love the projects we have planned, but please have a discussion with your student about the type of conduct we need to see during our lesson. We will be using supplies that cannot be abused or used in a manner that is not conducive to learning.

Standard:

S5L4. Obtain, evaluate and communicate information about how microorganisms benefit or harm larger organisms.(Clarification statement: Possible microorganisms could include Tardigrades, Lactobacillus, Probiotics, Rotifers, Salmonella, Clostridium botulinum (Botox), E-coli, Algae, etc. Students are not expected to know these specific organisms. The list is provided to give teachers examples.)

Construct an argument using scientific evidence to support a claim that microorganisms are beneficial.

Construct an argument using scientific evidence to support a claim that microorganisms are harmful.
